Gokarna is a town on the Arabian Sea, in the southwestern Indian state of Karnataka. A popular pilgrimage destination for Hindus, it’s known for sacred sites like Mahabaleshwar Temple, which has a shrine dedicated to the deity Shiva. Nearby, Koti Teertha is a temple tank where devotees wash in the holy waters. The town is also home to beaches such as palm-lined Gokarna, in the center, plus Kudle and Om farther south
ri Mahabaleshwara Swamy Temple in Gokarna, also known as the Mahabaleshwar Temple, is an ancient temple from the 4th century. Built in a classical Dravidian style, this Shiva temple is a popular pilgrimage site among Shiva devotees. Considered as holy as Varanasi, Gokarna town is also known as Dakshin Kashi, and this temple is considered the most important of all temples in the town. The Shivlinga installed in this temple is the mythological Atmalinga left on this spot by Ravana, and is supposed to bestow immense blessings to all who view it. Mahabaleshwar temple is considered one of the holy Mukti Sthals where death rites can be performed. Mahashivratri is a very popular time to visit this pilgrimage spot
Lined with date palm and coconut trees, Kudle beach is the second most beautiful beach in Gokarna. Mostly quiet and secluded, it comes to life from November to February, which is the peak tourism season. This beach does not offer a lot of entertainment and adventure options, but you can always come and sit here in solitude, enjoying the waves, the wind, and the serenity. Sunrise and sunsets at this beach are very pleasant, with large numbers of visitors flocking to the beach in the hours of dusk and dawn
